Connect with Us
There are a variety of ways you can be a part Indy Homeless Connect! There are a number of volunteer activities in which you can get involved. Below is a listing of the different volunteer positions available at Indy Homeless Connect. You can volunteer for this year's event by clicking here.
Guides – An important group of volunteers are needed to assist homeless clients in getting from one service area to another. Guide volunteers act as escorts and treat all clients with warmth and respect. They help direct the clients to the various services. All volunteers will be trained on what is available at the event and will be given a map.
Host – Each service area will need one or two "hosts" to greet each client as they arrive to obtain services such as employment counseling, benefits access, housing information, etc. Hosts will be trained to understand what services are available where they are stationed and to be able to identify what the clients' needs are based on their intake forms. This will be a coordinated effort with the guides who are assisting clients from one service area to another.
Food service – A majority of the homeless clients who will attend Indy Homeless Connect will likely visit the Indy Connect Café, a mini-restaurant that will serve meals to clients. Volunteers are needed to perform the typical service activities that are offered at most public cafés or restaurants, including hosts, waiters, food preparation, table bussers, etc.
Check-Out /Data Input – The Check-Out area is the final stop for clients. Check-Out offers another opportunity to ensure that clients were connected with the services they feel they needed and collect important data related to who visited the event and what services they may have asked for. We will also be handing out items to clients including hygiene kits, hats and gloves. Volunteers are needed to assist with handing these items out. Also, volunteers may be asked to help enter client data that is collected into a service database so that important follow-up work for the client can be performed.
Pre-event/Set-up - We will need volunteers during the week and on weekends to prepare prior to the Jan. 30 Indy Connect event. Assistance will be needed for data entry, packaging hygiene kits, assembling paperwork, and volunteer outreach. Also, we will need volunteers help out with on-site set-up at The Indiana Convention Center the day before the event.
Due to the nature of the event, we require that all volunteers at the event are 18 years and older. Volunteers under the age of 18 are more than welcome to help before the event with assembling and set-up.
